December Mpanza is an Occupational Therapist qualified in 2008 at the University of KwaZulu Natal.   He started his career at a rural district of KwaZulu Natal, namely Bethesda, where he completed his Community Service in 2009. He then continued his service as head of Occupational Therapy section for three years where he made a valuable contribution in development of the occupational therapy department within the hospital setting as well as community level.  He was a member of Umkhanyakude Municipality Disability Forum. During the three years of service Mr Mpanza was not only focus on patients but also on promotion and marketing of Occupational Therapy as profession and a career of choice through print media and local radio stations as well as presentations to the local high schools and nursing college. He was also a chairperson of Bethesda Umthombo Youth Development Bursary Scheme where he was heading the selection and marketing team of the bursary funds. Mr Mpanza was also Khanya Africa (NGO) Champion and leader responsible for organizing volunteering of health workers rendering the health service to the deep rural areas and hard to reach areas. He exceled reaching many people who were deprived access to health care services. Mr Mpanza is a very passionate person for people as a result he was also a chairperson of the Bethesda Health Care Christian Fellowship where he made a valuable contribution to the hospital employees and patient’s spiritual wellbeing. 

His leadership skills also made impact in various aspect of the Hospital such as Institutional Management Labour Committee (IMLC) and a Branch chairperson of the union.  In addition he was the deputy chairperson in district level and a member of Provincial Executive Board in KwaZulu Natal as well as provincial Young Workers Leader.  Mr Mpanza underwent a series of Labour related informal training. In 2011 he was elected as a member of Public Service International (PSI) representing young workers in a national and international level.  

In 2013 Mr Mpaqnza was appointed as Senior Tutor in the University of KwaZulu Natal. He is a lecturer and supervisor for Physical and Community Rehabilitation from first year to fourth year level. He also lectures in OT methods such as splinting. In addition he is a co-supervisor for undergraduate research.  Mr Mpanza is also a part time lecturer for medical third year students at Medical School focusing on rehabilitation role in management of certain conditions.  Mr Mpanza is currently studying his masters in Occupational Therapy researching about substance abuse services in rural areas of KwaZulu Natal. His research interest is on Qualitative and Mixed methods Research on Physical, Community and Rural rehabilitation as well as Substance abuse.
